Can You Actually Use Linen Pads for Heavy Periods? My Honest Experience

It's easier then ever to find oeko-tex certified linen reusable menstrual pads online and this guest blog post is all about how they hold up with a massively heavy flow (I have a large fibroid).

If you've ever had a heavy period, you've probably wondered: can linen pads actually handle heavy periods?

I know I did.

The idea of switching from traditional period products to reusable linen pads sounded appealing, but I wasn't sure if they would truly work for heavy flow days. Would they leak? Would they be comfortable? Could I actually rely on them in everyday life?

I'm Kayla, the founder of Eternal Tallow, and before switching to reusable linen pads, I had used mostly tampons for years, with disposable pads occasionally when needed. Eventually, tampons just weren't working for me anymore. I was dealing with leakage more often, and I also became increasingly concerned about the ingredients in conventional period products and what was coming into contact with such a sensitive part of my body every month.

As someone who is passionate about natural living and being mindful of what we put on and in our bodies, I wanted to find a more natural alternative that actually worked.

So I decided to try reusable linen pads.

I purchased a variety of sizes - for example these ones from White Rose Linen, and after using them consistently, my opinion completely changed.

Why I Switched From Tampons to Linen Pads

My decision wasn't just about sustainability.

It was really driven by two things:

  • My tampons were no longer preventing leaks the way I wanted them to.

  • I wanted a more natural option because I had questions about the materials and ingredients used in many conventional menstrual products.

Running Eternal Tallow has made me much more aware of the products I use every day and what comes into contact with my body. I wanted my period products to align with the same values I have around choosing simpler, more natural options.

I wanted something I could trust without constantly worrying about leaks or wondering what was sitting against my skin for hours at a time.

Can Linen Pads Handle Heavy Periods and Heavy Flow?

In my experience, absolutely.

The biggest lesson I learned is that success comes down to choosing the right size pad for where you are in your cycle.

This is one reason I like the linen pads from White Rose Linen. They come in different sizes, which allows me to choose the right option depending on my flow. Having the right size for lighter days versus my heaviest days has made a huge difference, and I think it's one of the biggest reasons they've worked so well for me.

A properly sized linen pad can hold far more flow than many people expect because of its absorbent inner layers.

When I matched the size of the pad to my flow, I found them incredibly effective—even during my heaviest days.

I also found them significantly more comfortable than disposable pads. Linen feels softer against the skin and doesn't have that plastic feeling that I had become used to with conventional products.

Do Reusable Linen Pads Leak During Heavy Periods?

This is one of the biggest concerns people have before making the switch.

Many people assume that reusable pads cannot handle heavy bleeding, but that hasn't been my experience.

The key is understanding that one size does not work for every day of your cycle.

For heavier days, you need a larger, more absorbent pad. For lighter days, a smaller option may be more comfortable.

The biggest factors that have helped me avoid leaks are:

  • Choosing the correct size for my flow.

  • Positioning the pad properly.

  • Changing it when needed.

Once I understood this, I found linen pads to be just as reliable as disposable products.

Can You Wear Linen Pads Overnight?

Yes, you can.

From my experience, linen pads can occasionally shift overnight—but so can disposable pads.

The same can happen if you've been sitting for a long period of time.

For me, this hasn't been a reason to stop using them. It simply means being a little more mindful.

If needed, I'll:

  • Adjust the position of the pad.

  • Change into a fresh one before bed.

  • Choose a larger pad for overnight protection.

To me, these are the same practical adjustments I'd make with disposable products anyway.

Are Linen Pads More Work?

Yes.

There's no point pretending otherwise.

Reusable linen pads do require washing and caring for them.

But I've found that the extra effort is well worth it.

Over time, they can save a significant amount of money compared to constantly buying disposable products.

Even more importantly for me, I feel better knowing exactly what is coming into contact with my skin every month.

That peace of mind has become far more valuable than the small amount of extra laundry.

Are Reusable Pads Worth It for Heavy Periods?

For me, absolutely.

If a friend with a heavy period asked me whether they could actually rely on linen pads, I'd tell them they can.

My biggest advice would be:

  • Choose quality linen pads in the right sizes for your different flow days.

  • Give yourself one or two cycles to get used to positioning them.

  • Don't assume reusable means less absorbent—it often surprises people just how much they can hold.

The Linen Pads I Personally Use

If you're thinking about making the switch and want to know what I personally use, the reusable linen pads I purchased are from White Rose Linen.

I chose them because I wanted a natural, reusable option that would be comfortable against my skin and reliable during heavier flow days.

Having different sizes available has been one of the biggest factors in making the switch successful for me. A heavier flow day requires something different than a lighter day, and having options makes reusable pads much easier to use.

I don't make these pads myself—I’m simply sharing my honest experience as someone who purchased and uses them.

My Final Thoughts on Linen Pads for Heavy Periods

Looking back, I wish I had made the switch sooner.

I originally tried linen pads because my tampons weren't performing the way I needed them to, and I wanted a more natural option.

What I discovered was a product that not only handled my heavy flow but also felt far more comfortable to wear.

Yes, reusable linen pads require a little more effort than throwing away a disposable product.

But for me, the benefits have far outweighed that inconvenience.

I spend less money over time, I feel more confident about what touches my skin, and I no longer question whether reusable pads can handle a heavy period.

From my own experience, they absolutely can.

If you'd like to try the same linen pads I use, you can find them here and choose the sizes that best match your flow.
